Dive into the enthralling world of historical and speculative fiction penned by Mark Piper.
Colonial Monsters- his latest series- is Romantic Historical Fiction set in Nova Scotia beginning in 1749.
His "Mouse and Elephant Trilogy" takes readers on a rollercoaster ride between heaven and hell, weaving equal parts humor and fear into tales set in the near future.
Based in Dartmouth and Lake Charlotte, Nova Scotia, Mark's writings are as diverse and compelling as his own life journey.
A heartbreaking & triumphant novel of Romantic Historical fiction. Sam and Anjij are star-crossed lovers from very different worlds poised on the brink of war. Together they share a dark secret that must never be uncovered. Their spell-binding story is woven into and around the violent struggle for control of Nova Scotia between Britain, France, America, and the Mi’kmaq in the early 1800’s.
Sam is a loveable scoundrel from the slums of London. He scales the ladder into high society using wit, deception, and charm. Sam becomes the aide du camp for Prince Edward, who has been exiled to the Colonies by his father, King George. Sam & Edward share a similar tragic fate: they are the most sought-after bachelors in Nova Scotia, and each loves a lady that British society will never tolerate.
Anjij is the clever and curious daughter of a Mi’kmaw chief. She loves Sam dearly but cannot find acceptance in his culture. Orphaned, betrayed, and hunted by bloodthirsty men for the bounty on her head, she becomes the chief of a small band of her people, who are pushed to the brink of extinction by cruelty and disease.
If they try to live together, they’ll likely be killed… but can they bear to live apart?
Sam and Anji are from two very different worlds, thrust together by tragedy when Indigenous and European cultures collide in Mi’kma’ki. A breathtaking action-packed novel of Romantic & Historical Fiction about two orphans determined to survive… woven into and around Nova Scotia’s surprisingly brutal history.
In 1749, Sam Collins - a quick-witted street urchin – is abducted by some very strange and wealthy people in London. He robs them, escapes and sails for Nova Scotia. He feels odd, though: he doesn’t need to sleep, and minds the bright sun? Sam quickly adapts to life in the New World where global conquest – at any cost – is England’s goal. When he’s not being a loveable rogue, a thief, and a scoundrel, he dreams of a girl…
Anjij is the clever and curious daughter of a Mi’kmaw chief. She and Sam meet as innocent children in a time of conflict. She is orphaned by bloodthirsty men, then adopted by Acadian parents in Grand Pre. When Sam’s regiment is ordered to deport the Acadians in 1755, the two star-crossed lovers must quickly decide on their future. Anjij suspects that Sam has dark secrets. She’s just not sure how dark?
If they run away together, they’ll likely be killed… but can they bear to live apart?
The Mouse and Elephant Trilogy are novels of scathing speculative satire, dystopian comedy, and alternate history set in Canada and the USA in the near future (as seen from 2017.)
Warning : (For my safety) Don’t read these books if you would start a war to enrich your company's shareholders; or rape the planet's resources and leave a polluted mess in your wake for personal gain. Also, please don’t read these books if you own lots of rapid-fire assault weapons and worship an insane, obese orange criminal who somehow became the leader of a mighty nation.
But if that's not you- you’re likely a reasonable person, and I encourage you to read away. These books have hockey socks full of great ideas to save our planet for future generations: politically, environmentally, and economically.
The suggestions and proposals in the books will work; we just need to find the moral courage to demand change.
I wrote these books because what we are doing now in ‘developed’ Western nations is not sustainable or defendable. The books are a road map to effective governance and a survival guide for the eventual Trumpocalypse. Currently, the majority of elected officials of all political stripes in most countries serve only their corporate masters, not us. The Mouse and Elephant Trilogy explains how we can transfer “Power to the People!”
